Diamond Mountain District, Napa Valley (123 cases produced).
This is our signature Cabernet made exclusively from selected grape clusters from our shy-bearing vineyards located adjacent to the headwaters of historic Cyrus Creek. The near-perfect 2016 growing season started early with Diamond Mountain experiencing a warm, dry spring, which resulted in early bud-break. The ideal weather conditions of warm days and cool nights continued throughout summer and wrapped as the valley’s first significant fall rainstorm arrived on October 14th. Thanks to a relatively steady and mild July and August and then a series of warm days at the end of the growing season, Diamond Mountain vineyards were able to progress to perfect ripeness. A fifth consecutive year of stellar quality for Napa Valley!
To craft this wine, we were fortunate once again to be able to turn to our award winning fourth-generation winemaker Massimo Monticelli whose skills in both the vineyard and cellar have been in no small way responsible for the great success of our previous vintages. The harvest took place in the early morning hours of October 13, 2016.
The grapes came into the winery in optimal condition, small-berried, deep black blue and loose on the clusters. Following a four-day cold soak, the natural process of slow fermentation took 12 days. Following fermentation an extended maceration of nine days occurred, after which the wine was pressed and transferred to small new French Oak Taransaud barrels for aging in the cool cellar. The wine was bottled on August 14, 2018 after twenty-two months of maturation in the barrel and further aged in the bottle for an additional half-year.
The vintage is balanced and elegant in the classic fruit driven Cyrus Creek style. The first thing one notes is the deep ruby color finishing to the edge of the glass. Next comes the deeply fragrant and complex aromas of red currant and pomegranate, and a taste that follows thru with licorice, vanilla and pepper. Dark, intense and complex, this wine has lush silky tannins that round out to a long finish with a superb graphite note that shines through the whole experience. Wonderful now, this wine will benefit from further bottle aging reaching its peak in 3 to 5 years but drinkable for at least another 10 years thereafter. This cellar-worthy wine is best enjoyed if decanted one hour before serving.
