Diamond Mountain District, Napa Valley (180 cases produced).
This is our signature Cabernet made exclusively from selected grape clusters from our shy-bearing hillside vineyard located adjacent to the headwaters of historic Cyrus Creek. The 2017 growing season began with abundant rainfall followed by a very mild spring. A Labor Day weekend heatwave kicked the grapes into high gear then a cooler Diamond Mountain summer allowed sugar levels to return to normal. The harvest finished with perfect weather that allowed grapes to mature with elegance and finesse.
To craft this wine, we were fortunate once again to be able to turn to our award winning fourth-generation winemaker Massimo Monticelli whose skills in both the vineyard and cellar have been in no small way responsible for the great success of our previous vintages. The harvest took place in the early morning hours of October 20, 2017.
The grapes came into the winery in optimal condition, small-berried, deep black blue and loose on the clusters. Following a four-day cold soak, the natural process of slow fermentation began. Following a twelve-day fermentation an extended maceration of nine days occurred, after which the wine was pressed and transferred to small new French Oak Taransaud barrels for aging in the cool cellar. The wine was bottled on August 17, 2019 after twenty-two months of maturation in the barrel.
The vintage is elegant and finesse driven in the classic Cyrus Creek style. The first thing one notes is the deep ruby color finishing to the edge of the glass. Next follows complex aromas of cocoa covered raspberry and currants. The complexity is manifest on the palate by flavors of licorice, blackberry and cassis presented with a velvety mouth-feel enhanced by a long finish balanced by the supple ripeness of the silky tannins. An exceptional minerality shines through the whole experience. Wonderful now, this wine will benefit from further bottle aging reaching its peak in 3 to 5 years but drinkable for at least another 10 years thereafter. This cellar-worthy wine is best enjoyed if decanted one hour before serving.
